The American Express: Maverick McNealy

Ranked 10th on tour in birdie average; big plus at traditionally low scoring event. Played here in 2018 and although missed cut he was 7-under for three rounds. Finished 2019 in good form.

The Bob Hope, Humana Challenge, Career Builder Challenger, Desert Classic and now The American Express - this event has been known by a few names recently but since 2016 we’ve had some continuity of venue with the PGA West Stadium, PGA West Tournament and La Quinta Country Club hosting the first three rounds.

Low scoring has also been the order with the last four all getting to at least 20-under. You need to make birdies to win and that leads me to Maverick McNealy. The Korn Ferry graduate is currently 10th on tour in birdie average and finished 2019 in good form with finishes of 37-17-35-26-53 in his last five starts.

The 24-year-old already looks comfortable on the step up in grade and he enjoys a big advantage this week having played this event in 2018. He missed the cut on a respectable 7-under and was in good shape after opening rounds of 66-68.

Course experience is invaluable for a tour rookie and combined with his huge potential he rates a great bet at 200/1 with Coral paying 7 places at 1/5 odds.
