The American Express: Denny McCarthy

Traditionally an excellent putter but has started gaining strokes on the field tee-to-green. Has three missed cuts at this event but broken par 7/12 rounds and might surprise a few.

Weighing up course form versus current form is often a tricky balance but it’s fair to say those without much course form are longer in the market than they might otherwise be.

Even accounting for the Christmas break, Denny McCarthy has been in fine form with his last five starts producing finishes of 39-15-11-10-48, with the added bonus of getting four competitive rounds under his belt at the Sony Open.

This good run of form has been sparked by some excellent ball-striking (not usually McCarthy’s strong point) and that might precipitate an above expected run in California this week. His tournament record is MC-MC-48-MC but he’s broken par in 7/12 rounds. His is also 2/2 in cuts made at TPC Sawgrass, another famous Pete Dye course.

Clearly, McCarthy is playing well and on a course where excellent putting could help him go low, he isn’t a forlorn hope.

Betfred are paying 7 places at 1/5 odds.

*three dead heated for 6th place
