Honda Classic: Jhonattan Vegas

Lost over 4.5 strokes putting last week at Riviera but switch in coasts might bring change in fortune. Ball-striking is on-song and recent record at PGA National is 4-72-16-27-30.

It sometimes suggests a lack of imagination tipping the same golfer two weeks in a row but I think I just got the timing wrong with Jhonattan Vegas. Everything I wrote last week still stands; this a resurgent golfer playing his best stuff in years but PGA National pays more to his strengths.

Vegas ranked 20th last week in strokes gained tee-to-green he just struggling on the greens, ranking 73 (and near enough last) for strokes gained putting. A switch of coasts might be all his needs. Historically he’s not lit up the greens at PGA National, gained 0.09 strokes putting over last 20 rounds but he’s 12th in strokes gained tee to green from those who have played at least 12 rounds.

These excellent underlying statistics have translated into finishes of 4-72-16-27-30, with the variance down to putting as you’d expect. We will need a improved effort with the flat stick compared to Riviera but it’s possible and the ball-striking is there waiting to be capitalised upon.
