Benson The Ultimate Driving Machine

Terrific driver of the ball and could go well if the course plays long this week.

The European Open returns to the rota for the first time since 2009 replacing the now defunct Wales Open.

The Beckenbauer course at the Bad Griesbach resort hosts the tournament and with only a handful of Challenge Tour events to go on, we are flying blind to some degree.

From reading various course reports it has plenty of water and is a relatively long par-71 at 7,188 yards. All-in-all it’s not dissimilar to Celtic Manor, the course it has replaced in the schedule.

If the European Open mirrors the Wales Open then Seve Benson must enter the equation.

The Englishman started the season strongly with a good showing in the Desert Swing and although he’s missed his last two cuts, he opened with rounds of 65 at the European Masters and the Scottish Open.

A terrific driver of the ball, he should be suited by the course if it plays like Celtic Manor where he finished T8-T12 in the last two seasons.

At his best when there is a premium on ball-striking, he could outrun generous odds of 225/1 (Bet365).
