English Championship: Johannes Veerman

Finished T17-T28 since lockdown and ball-striking on song. Hits it a mile but also finding 3/4 greens in regulation. Third on tour for birdie average and low scoring in prospect on resort course.

Johannes Veerman caught the eye around the turn of the year with a series of top-15 finishes and he’s returned from lockdown in good form. Finishes of T17-T28 are perfectly respectable and the underlying numbers suggest there is more to come.

The American averaged 321.8 yards off the tee at the Forest of Arden and managed to rank 1st in driving accuracy in round 4. In both starts he’s averaged over 75% of GIR and although I don’t have ball-striking statistics to call-upon it fair to say he’d rank highly given his big-hitting.

With this type of player we are waiting for the putter to heat up but in 96 professional starts he has seven top-3 finishes and one win. These came at a lower-level but are still good to see. Hanbury Manor should see low scoring with conditions set fair, which bodes well for Veerman who is ranked third on tour for birdie average.
