Deutsche Bank Tips: Rory McIlroy
Would be leading the strokes gained tee-to-green statistic if he’d played more tournaments and won this event in 2012.
Having backed Bubba Watson because of his terrific tee-to-green and par 5 statistics we have to include Rory McIlroy in our portfolio of bets.
The world number 1 hasn’t played enough tournaments in the US to rank for the various metrics but his raw numbers are still available.
Rory McIlroy gains 2.226 strokes on the field tee-to-green, which is better than current number one for the metric Bubba Watson (2.061).
McIlroy’s scoring average on par 5s is 4.44 which is exactly the same as the number one ranked player – again Bubba Watson.
The world number one is a previous winner at TPC Boston (2012) and finished fifth last year.
A top-20 on his return from injury at Whistling Straits was impressive and with a couple more weeks of rehab under his belt, he could be nearing his best.
At 8/1 (Ladbrokes) he is an attractive win only bet.
