Open Championship Tip: Bill Haas
Has a couple of top-20 finishes at the Open and playing really well of late. Record in majors improving with T5 at Erin Hills.
With so much written about the top of the market of the Open Championship there’s plenty of value to be found down the field, with several notable players easily overlooked.
Bill Haas might not jump out amongst the stellar names but he is a previous FedEx Champion and has six PGA Tour titles to his name. What’s been lacking off his CV is contending in major but that seems to be changing. Haas hasn’t missed a cut in a major since the 2015 Open Championship and recently recorded his best ever finish with a T5 at the US Open last month.
The 35-year-old wouldn’t automatically strike you as a links specialist but his Open record is MC-57-19-MC-51-MC-9 and he has the tools to succeed.
Not especially long or straight off the tee, Haas has the uncanny ability to fashion a score. He is ranked ninth for GIRs and ninth for adjusted scoring average and arrives in good form. His is 5/5 in cuts made from his last five starts and that includes three top-15 finishes.
After a mini-slump mid-season, Haas is now hitting it longer and straighter off the tee than he has all season and his putter is heating up. That all adds up to a dangerous combination. Back Haas with Sky Bet and get 10 places at 1/5 odds.
