British Open Profile: Tiger Woods
The world number one again but still waiting for that elusive 15th major.
Best Odds: 10/1 (PaddyPower)
Age: 37
World Ranking: 1
Best Results in Open: Champion - 2000, 2005, 2006
Open Record:
Glittering. Three-time winner of the Claret Jug, Tiger also had four other top-10 finishes in this tournament between 1998 and 2004. Of course everybody knows that he hasn’t won a major since 2008, but his Open record was actually looking pretty ordinary since the triumph of 2006, at least till last year’s T3. The American reached a nadir when missing the cut in 2009.
Form:
From a purely PGA Tour perspective Tiger is enjoying a vintage campaign having won four tournaments including the WCG Cadillac and The Players Championship - he sits top of the Fed-Ex standings as well as the world rankings. He finished T4 at Augusta but the concern would be that he hasn’t played competitively since the US Open a month ago as he nurses an elbow injury.
Verdict:
Based on 2013 tournaments stats he is a worthy favourite but concerns about his five-year major drought would persist even without fitness doubts. With those thrown in he does look a little uncompetitively priced. His memories of Muirfield will be mixed; in 2002 he had three decent rounds obliterated by an 81 in round three as a gale defeated him. He began that tournament as a 6/4 shot so times have changed.
