British Open Profile: Rory McIlroy

McIlroy missed the cut last time out in Ireland

The two-time major champion finds himself in the doldrums.

Best Odds: 28/1 StanJames

World Ranking: 2
Best result in Open: T3 - 2010

Open Record:

In his very first major championship, McIlroy won the leading amateur silver medal in 2007 at Carnoustie after finishing T42, aged just 18. Three years later at St Andrews the Northern Ireland youngster was to make an even bigger splash when he shot a 9-under-par 63 on the opening day. After following this with an 80, weekend rounds of 68 and 69 earned him a T3 finish. He hasn’t hit the same heights in this Open since.

Form:

A pale imitation of the man who finished 2012 like a juggernaut. He has toiled on the PGA Tour for the most part this season with only brief rejuvenation coming at the Players Championship (T8) and at the Texas Open where he finished second. Other than that it’s been hugely disappointing for The Irish star who finished +14 at the US Open before even missing the cut back in his homeland.

Verdict:

Although his price is the longest it’s been for some time, it’s still not tempting, given the strife McIloy is enduring. Nothing has really been quite right ever since his ill-fated switch to Nike clubs at the turn of the year while pundits continue to speculate as to whether the US PGA champion can handle the spotlight that has been thrust upon him at a pretty young age. Other blame Caroline Wozniacki, which seems a little harsh. Regardless, this doesn’t look like his time for glory.
