British Masters Tip: Tom Lewis

Played Hillside three times in Open qualifying, always finishing in top-10. Proven on links and took off in second half of 2018, winning twice. Ranked second for GIRs on last start in Morocco.

The British Masters might be an iconic name but its place in the calendar means only four of the world’s top-50 have bothered to turn-up, one of them being tournament host Tommy Fleetwood. For all the positive publicity it will create this is a run of the mill European Tour field and that is evident in the prices with Tommy Fleetwood 9/1 and the rest 18/1 bar.

What bring the stardust to this tournament is Hillside GC, an excellent links course that has hosted final qualifying for the Open Championship. Looking back through those past results, one name leaps out - Tom Lewis.

The Englishman finished in the top-10 three times at final qualifying at Hillside (2015-2017) but never made it through to the Open, however that is valuable course experience that not many of his rivals have.

Tom Lewis famously led the Open Championship at Royal St. George’s in 2011 and although he’s had some fallow years since the 28-year-old seems to be finally fulfilling his potential. Last season he won on the Challenge Tour and the European Tour and is now ranked 66 in the world.

That makes him one of the highest ranked players in the field and he started 2019 strongly with finishes of T9-T48-3 in the desert. Scheduling on the European Tour means he’s not played much since but he showed up well with a T24 at the WGC Matchplay and finished T21 at the Trophee Hassan II, where tee-to-green he was excellent, ranking second for GIRs. With his skills proven on a links course this looks the perfect test for him.

Tom Lewis is available at 50/1 with Skybet paying 8 places and 40/1 with Betfred paying 10 places both 1/5 odds.
