BMW PGA Championship: James Morrison

Has a couple of top-15 finishes on the West Course and his accuracy and course knowledge is an advantage. Game on an upwards curve with four top-30 finishes in last five starts.

We have a new date for the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and by luck (or judgement) it could reinvigorate the tournament. With the PGA Tour season in it’s wraparound stage, this is the biggest tournament in town and it has attracted a high quality field. However the PGA Tour regulars and I include the likes of Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson in this, haven’t played for three weeks so there might be some cobwebs to blow off.

Throw in the fact that Wentworth isn’t your usual ‘bomb & gauge’ course you might find on the PGA Tour and it could throw up a surprise winner of the Andrew Oldcorn or Scott Drummond variety.

James Morrison might not find it a complement being thrown in with those shock winners but he won’t care if he’s lifting the trophy on Sunday. The Englishman was very candid about his struggles when interviewed by the European Tour Website but a renewed perspective is yielding results.

Morrison’s last five starts have produced finishes of 30-29-28-MC-4 and although these have been at a lower level it’s the best form he’s shown for almost four years. He’s broken 70 in 11 of his last 18 competitive rounds and the local lad will feel comfortable on the West Course this week.  He has two top-15 finishes to his name and was firmly in the hunt at the halfway stage in 2012 before a calamitous 81 on Saturday.

One of the straightest hitters on tour (ranked 14th in driving accuracy) the twisting tree-lined layout of the West Course can feel like a straight-jacket but one that won’t inhibit Morrison. His putter is also working well and he is a lively outsider.

Betfred are paying 7 places at 1/5 odds.
