BMW PGA Championship Trends

The European Tour’s flagship events takes place at Wentworth this week. We examine the trends of past winners of the PGA Championship.

A high quality field assembles at Wentworth for the PGA Championship, with Justin Rose heading the betting. Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren are also make in Europe after recent exploits in the States.

Despite the high quality field, the tournament has generated surprise winners with Simon Khan and Scott Drummond both triumphing against the odds.

We look at the trends over the last seven years for clues:

Top-60 on tour for scoring average
Course specialist Simon Khan was a surprise winner in 2010 but the last seven champions have ranked inside the top-60 on tour for scoring average.

Top-60 on tour in putts per GIRs
This metric is slightly swayed by Luke Donald winning the tournament twice but the last six winners, which include McIlroy and Manassero, ranked inside the top-20 on tour in putts per GIR.

Top-10 finish in the last three years
Even the surprise winners of the PGA have enjoyed previous good results at Wentworth. Six of the past eight champions had enjoyed a top-10 finish within three years of their victory.

Players that fit all three trends:
GRACE, Branden
HATTON, Tyrrell
JOHNSTON, Andrew
