BMW PGA Championship: Shane Lowry

Finished 6-15-11-13-17 in last five starts at Wentworth and ball-striking still on point. Suffered from a cold putter over summer but got it going at the St. Jude and knows these greens well.

Three worlds collide at Wentworth this week with PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV players all competing at Europe’s flagship event. Comparing all three tours isn’t easy but thankfully there is a standout candidate.

Shane Lowry has endured several near misses and is long overdue a win at a venue that suits him well. The Irishman has cracked the top-20 in each of his last five visits and although recent results on Tour have cooled his ball-striking is still where it needs to be.

Lowry relatively quiet summer (and it wasn’t poor with top-10s in Canada and Ireland) was down to a cold putter, losing strokes to the field in five consecutive starts before getting hot again at the FedEx St. Jude. The flat stick is the frustration and we must accept the peaks and troughs Lowry goes through.

On a course and greens he knows very well I predict an upswing in the putting stats and the stormy weather forecast on Thursday and Friday probably won’t put him off either. After McIlory I think Lowry is the second most likely winner and therefore i’m happy to snap up the 14/1 with Boylesports paying 1/5 odds and 10 places.
