Pebble Beach Pro-Am Tips: Stewart Cink

Has four top-20s this season and ranked eighth in adjusted scoring average. Finished T21 last year.

Like my Phil Mickelson tip, Stewart Cink’s last victory came at the Open Championship but his came way-back in 2009. Unfortunately, he is remembered for ruining perhaps the greatest ever sport’s story, beating a 59-year-old Tom Watson in a playoff. That win probably had an adverse effect on his golf but it’s amazing what a bit of perspective does.

Cink’s wife Lisa has been battling breast cancer and although the signs are encouraging, it’s still been an unsettling time in his life. Perversely it seems to help his golf, speaking to the Golf Channel about his wife getting sick he said, “It’s had a little bit of an effect on my golf, because I’ve been playing a little bit better and it’s been more fun and it’s been a different kind of fun out here for me. I would say that’s been a very positive impact on my golf out here.”

That has translated into results. During the wraparound season he’s finished MC-15-15-10-36-MC-20 and is currently ranked eighth in adjusted scoring average.

No one would begrudge him a win at Pebble Beach but there is logic beyond the emotional pull. Cink finished T21 last year, the first time he played this event since 2000 and he returns in much better form at 150/1 (Bet365).
