29th Nov 2016 | Dunhill Links Championship

Alfred Dunhill Championship Tip: Paul Dunne

Alfred Dunhill Championship

Field lacks strength in depth and Dunne’s best result of 2016 came in South Africa. Takes his second look at Leopard Creek.

At this time of year it’s hard to muster much enthusiasm for golf betting. A succession of limited field invitationals or poor quality fields means it best to keep your powder dry until 2017.

The European Tour starts a new season with the Alfred Dunhill Championship, a tournament Charl Schwartzel has won three times in the last four years. He is favourite to do so again, with 2015 champion Branden Grace not far behind in the betting. Both should do well but at the odds are unbackable.

One player I’ve followed in the second half of 2016 (with limited success) is Paul Dunne. The Irishman finished 106th on the Race To Dubai to retain his paying rights and hopefully he can play some pressure free golf for a few months.

Dunne’s best result of 2016 came in South Africa at the Joburg Open and although he missed the cut at Leopard Creek last year at least he’s had a look at the course.

In a weak field, he has more upside than most purely because of his age. But don’t forget this is a player who led the Open as an amateur and at 125/1 (BetVictor) we can take a risk.
