Boise Open: Dominic Bozzelli

Had a difficult year starting on a Medical extension but has found form in the last month with three top-25 finishes in four starts. Capable of making mark at this slightly lower level.

Last week I took a watching brief as the Korn Ferry Finals got underway. The field comprised a mixture of the best Korn Ferry Tour players and those who have lost PGA Tour cards and although Scottie Scheffler struck a blow for the feeder tour the leaderboard was littered with those dropping down in class. Of the top-10 finishers in Colombus, eight were players dropping down from the PGA Tour and that is my angle in this week.

Hillcrest CC hosts a Finals event for the the fourth year and looking back at past winners a similair pattern emerges. Michael Thompson (2016), Chesson Hadley (2017) and Sangmoon Bae (2018) are all what i’d call ‘PGA Tour players’ who thrived with the slight ease in grade. That narrows down the field slightly but the player that stands out for me is Dominic Bozzelli.

The New Yorker started the season on a Medical Extension and after coming up shy of his FedEx points target player the rest of the season on conditional status. That can’t have been easy for the 28-year-old but he made a decent fist of things with a fifth place at the Desert Classic. A fallow period during the summer followed but he’s started to find form again with top-25 finishes at the Barbasol and Barracuda Championship.

Both of those events featured weakened fields similair to what he contests this week and he should be encouraged by his ball-striking. Even though he missed the cut at Wyndham Championship on his last PGA Tour start he hit 89% of GIRs. He followed that up by ranking T20 for GIRs at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship last week and marry that to his usually good putting and he could contend.
