3M Open Tip: Sam Ryder

Best results have come in this part of the US and across the border in Canada. Played well despite missing the cut last week and one to keep onside if this becomes a shoot-out.

The 3M Open is a new event on the PGA Tour and having hosted events on the Champions Tour, TPC Twin Cities has recently been upgraded in anticipation of the big boys. Truth be told we won’t know who this 7,468 yard par-71 course suits until late on Sunday but it is in Minneapolis, and therefore a rare visit to the north of the States for the PGA Tour.

As noted by Ben Coley last week, some players thrive from limited opportunities in the north and Sam Ryder is one such player.  He was runner-up in last year’s John Deere Classic in Illinois and he won in nearby Nebarska on the Web.com Tour at the Pinnacle Bank Championship. Go back further and he won across the border in Ontario at the National Capital Open.

Ryder therefore likes this part of the world and although he failed to make the weekend at the Rocket Mortgage Classic he finished on the cut line at 4-under. The 29-year-old has shown more than a glimpse of form since returning from injury and this could be the week he pulls it all together.

Ryder is ranked in the top-35 on tour for birdie average and putting and if this is a low scoring week he could capitalise, especially given his last two wins came with scores of -21 and -20.
