Alonso Can Reign In Spain

The bookmakers have made Lewis Hamilton impossible to back and his poor record in Spain opens the door for the home favourite.

Lewis Hamilton is short odds to win his fourth race in a row this weekend but at 8/13 he must be opposed.

The British driver is in the fastest car but the Catalunya circuit isn’t one of his favourites.

In the last five seasons he has beaten 30% fewer rivals at the Spanish GP compared to his seasonal average (2009 to 2013). That is a concern no matter what car he is driving.

Laying Hamilton for the win at 4/6 with Betfair is a good ploy but because we are primarily backers we need to look elsewhere for value.

Fernando Alonso is 4/6 (BetVictor) to record a top-4 finish and that is an equally good wager.

The Spaniard is currently third in the Championship therefore he won’t need to improve to land the bet and he’s got an impressive record in his home grand prix.

In the last five seasons, Alonso has beaten 8% more rivals at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya than his seasonal average. A rare improvement amongst the current crop of rivals, with only a handful bettering their season ‘average’ at the track.
