USA v Portugal Tip: Klinsmann's Boys Dare To Dream

After having their goal difference obliterated, Portugal will be all but out with anything less than three points in Manaus.

There are a couple of reasons to think that the USA can all but eliminate Portugal on Sunday evening.

The biggest factor in the outcome of this match is Cristiano Ronaldo. The World Player of the Year did play 90 minutes as his side capitulated 4-0 to Germany but the Real Madrid star did not look his best. After limping out of training on Friday, serious doubts must remain as to whether the 29-year-old can do himself justice.

Without a fully fit Ronaldo, Portugal look like an average side. They only managed one goal in two games without him just prior to the tournament and they just don’t have anybody who can weigh in with goals.

The USA surprised many by beating Ghana 2-1 but there is a case for saying that Jurgen Klinsmann’s boys are benefiting from arriving fresher than most. Major League soccer only began for the season in March whereas most of Portugal’s squad for example have been playing non-stop since last August.

At best odds of 29/10 (Bet365), I think USA can get the draw which would probably see them into the next round. That would leave Portugal three points behind with a much worse goal difference.
