Spain v Netherlands Tip: Scoreline Prediction

The Dutch may set out to be less confrontational than in 2010, but then again Brazil showed in the Confederations Cup that it may be the best way to get at Spain.

The first heavyweight showdown of the 2014 World Cup sees a repeat of the 2010 World Cup final. Four years ago Spain defeated the Netherlands 1-0 after extra time in a game which has been remembered above all for its physical nature.

There were 14 yellow cards that night at Soccer City, Johannesburg and the Netherlands, who in particular received criticism for being overly aggressive, also had John Heitinga sent off. No doubt with those memories in mind, BetVictor are offering your money back on selected markets if there is another red card here.

One of those markets is ‘correct score’ and Spain are ideal fodder in this respect. The defending champions haven’t conceded a single goal in their last 10 knockout matches at the World Cup and European Championships going back to 2008. So a clean sheet for Vicente del Bosque’s men is an obvious start point for a scoreline prediction.

On the other side of the equation, Spain rarely run amok against any half decent opposition. They prefer to conserve their energy and see out games through ruthless possession control.

In their last showdown with a big footballing nation, La Roja beat Italy 1-0 in March in what was a pretty one-sided encounter. I would predict something similar here. That scoreline is available at best odds of 5/1 (Betfred), but with BetVictor offering a red card refund we might as well take the fractionally shorter price of 19/4.

*If any player is sent off during Spain v Netherlands, BetVictor will refund all losing Correct Score, First/Last/Anytime Goalscorer, HT/FT, Scorecast and Spincast bets as a free bet, up to £25.
