Germany v Algeria Tip: Underdogs Can Score In Defeat

The Desert Foxes may have the scandal of 1982 on their mind before they head out to face Germany.

We’ve been backing Algeria to cause upsets from Day One of this World Cup and they have indeed done themselves proud by reaching the knockout stages for the first time in their history. Of course, it might not have been the first time had their next opponents played in the spirit of the game back in 1982.

The match known as the ‘Disgrace of Gijon’ saw Germany play out a mutually convenient fixture against Austria - the 1-0 victory for the Germans ensured both those teams advanced at the expense of the plucky Algerians.

The underdogs can’t rely on tainted memories from a bygone era helping them on Monday, but it does add spice to an occasion that would mean so much no matter what.

Joachim Low has so much quality at his disposal, and such professionalism as a group, that it’s almost impossible to foresee a major shock here. However, we can improve our odds greatly by backing the Greens to find the net in defeat. Germany are a best price of 2/1 (WilliamHill) to win with both teams to score.

Algeria showed their adventure by becoming the first African nation to ever score four times in a World Cup clash as they impressed in Group H. They stormed to a 4-2 victory over South Korea and also found the net against highly-rated Belgium and Russia.

But this refusal to be shut-out is nothing new. Algeria haven’t been denied by an opposing goalkeeper in any of their last 11 matches and were last denied in January 2013.
