Title Favourites Set To Prove Their Mettle

Chelsea head to Turf Moor where a battle against the relegation favourites will be anything but easy.

The opening weekend of the Premier League season hasn’t seen any one-sided matches with only Sergio Aguero’s stoppage time strike sealing a two-goal margin of victory for Man City. Every other game has been either decided by one goal or ended as a draw.

We should expect this trend to continue on Monday night when Burnley entertain title favourites Chelsea at Turf Moor. The promoted sides are capable of springing surprises at this stage as the Clarets demonstrated last time they played at this level when Man Utd were defeated in 2009.

However, Chelsea are title favourites for a reason and one would expect them to escape with a narrow, hard-fought victory here. Mourinho’s men had the best defence in 2013-14 and this is the sort of fixture then tend to pick up clean sheets in.

But Burnley were something of the Chelsea of the Championship last term where they kept 19 clean sheets and only conceded 37 goals in 46 matches - the best record in the division. A tight contest is therefore on the cards.

It’s tempting to simply take the evens on there being under 2.5 goals in the match but I think we can be a little braver and select the best price 6/1 (WilliamHill) on Chelsea winning 1-0. That would be classic Mourinho and get the title bid off and running nicely.
