Talk Of The Toon

Newcastle will be desperate to end their run of derby defeats and statistically there's a case to be made that Sunderland are the worst team in the league.

Sunderland have dominated the Wear-Tyne derby for a little while now but all runs come to an end and I think Sunday will be the day when the Geordies reclaim bragging rights.

For John Carver, this is it. In all probability he won’t be in charge for another derby so leading Newcastle to victory against the old enemy would represent a career highlight. He hasn’t been helped by a long injury list but statistically his side are still clearly superior.

Indeed, based on shot analysis, nobody is worse than Sunderland in the Premier League. They average the fewest shots per game (10.2) and concede the most shots per game (16.1). In many ways it’s just surprising they aren’t already in the relegation zone!

In comparison, the Magpies are the 12th best for the shots they have per game (12.0) and 7th best for how many shots opponents have against them (11.7).

If we’re going to back the Toon Army, we’re as well to back the away win to nil at best odds of 4/1. The Black Cats have scored a measly one goal in their last seven outings across all competitions.
