Sunderland v Liverpool Tip

Larsson: A key man for Sunderland

A league table that began when Martin O'Neill took over would see the Mackems well ahead of the Reds.

Last week I only lost my tip on Sunderland to win the Tyne-Wear derby in injury time. The good news is that in a results-based industry, that has probably helped to make Martin O’Neill’s side backable odds again this week; they are currently a best price 10/3 (WilliamHill) to win at home to Liverpool. That looks enticing.

Before O’Neill began his reign with a win on 11 December, Sunderland were in the relegation zone and 15 points behind Liverpool. The gap now is just five points - a remarkable turnaround even allowing for the fact that the Black Cats have played two more league games in that intervening period.

The Mackems have beaten the luminaries of Manchester City and Arsenal at the Stadium of Light already in 2012, and defeating Liverpool would make for an impressive hat-trick.  For all their cup prowess, the Reds have won just once in their last seven league outings. If they don’t improve on their dismal shot conversion rate (8.6%) - the worst in the top flight - that run is set to continue on Saturday.
