Saints Can Shine At Stamford Bridge

The champions remain inconsistent at best but Southampton are improving all the time.

Despite an unfortunate 3-2 defeat against Man United, it’s hard to escape the sense that Southampton are improving a lot quicker than Chelsea after both made sluggish starts to the campaign.

The Saints have scored 14 times in their last five outings across all competitions (W3 D1 L1) and have kept three clean sheets in that run. Look closer at the stats and we shouldn’t be surprised.

Koeman’s boys have conceded the third fewest shots per game (9.6) in the Premier League, faring much better defensively than Chelsea (13.9).

On the face of it the sides are performing more equally down the other end given that both have attempted 16.4 shots per match. However, even offensively the champions look inferior upon closer inspection.

Southampton’s attempts have generally been higher in quality with an average of 11.7 shots per game coming from inside the penalty area. Compare this to just 8.8 from within the box for the Blues.

The more you look at it the more the upset could be on the cards at best odds of 17/4 with Coral.
