Rafa Overachieving

The Toon Army are enjoying a bright start back in the big time and Rafa can keep the feel good factor coming, at least for now.

In truth this game could go either way but the bookies’ bias towards Southampton isn’t merited and means we should go the other way.

Newcastle have more points, enjoy more shots on target and so far concede fewer shots on their own goal. Pellegrini worked under Benitez at Valencia and, at this time, it is the former Chelsea and Liverpool boss who still looks like the master.

Southampton are nothing longer than 6/1 to win 1-0 but the Magpies are available at 12/1 with WilliamHill to win by the same scoreline. Twice the price but most certainly not twice as unlikely.

Every Newcastle away league game has produced one goal so far and Saints’ fixtures are generally low scoring. So 9/4 (Bet365) on under 1.5 goals in the match is an alternative but we should be brave to maximize the value.
