Premier League Relegation Treble Tip: 2021-22

Ralph Hasenhuttl's reputation has been high, but 2021 has been a poor year for the Saints to date. Selling his star striker won't help.

Picking the three teams to go down tends to look blindingly obvious by February, but the trick is to select wisely in August, when the odds are steep. Watford, Norwich and Southampton are our selections at 28/1 with Skybet.

The case for the two promoted clubs isn’t too tough to make, given this falls in line with most bookies and pundits. Norwich could well have more going for them than last time up, in some regards, but the loss of talisman Buendia is devastating. They also had Jamal Lewis and Ben Godfrey last time they were here, when they finished last on 21pts.

Not quite as good as the Canaries in the Championship, Watford lack top flight quality with Ismaila Sarr offering one of the few glimmers of hope. The board won’t have any patience and that will surely be required. The chances of bringing in a rescue act expert all the harder because of said owners.

Southampton perhaps need most explanation as only the 7th favourites for relegation. But this is a team on a steep downward descent. Just 4 wins in the league after January 4th saw the Saints slip from one-time leaders to in danger of relegation.

While Danny Ings was there a calamity always looked unlikely, but he, like Buendia, has moved on to Villa Park. Adam Armstrong has come in as a replacement, but they are big boots to fill. With Vestergaard now also bound for Leicester, there are worrying signs aplenty at St Mary’s Stadium. A couple of 9-0 defeats over the last two seasons show how heads can drop.
