Last Season's Lessons

Last season West Ham ranked 1st against the top ten sides while City languished in 14th based on the same criteria.

West Ham have been priced up for their trip to the Etihad as you would expect a bottom six side to be priced up on their way to facing champions elect.

But these sides finished just four points apart last season and it’s far too soon to say there is a chasm between them in 2016-17. Backing a draw or away win at best odds of 3/1 in the double chance market has to be value.

First of all we know that Bilic’s boys triumphed in this fixture last September at a point when that outcome looked just as unlikely as it does now. City had just won their opening five league fixtures without conceding a goal.

And that was no flash in the pan. The Hammers had the best record of any side in matches against the rest of the top half of the table (W8 D6 L4).

Compare that to Pellegrini’s City who ranked a dismal 14th in the same metric (W4 D4 L10).

The Blues were essentially only effective as flat track bullies and this will be the first test of whether Guardiola has made that a thing of the past.
