Highest Scoring Team in Premier League Tip: Liverpool

The cynics and the bookies are united in dismissing the Reds without Suarez. But Rodgers' young bucks scored 101 times last season and will continue to attack perhaps more than anybody else out there.

The bookies have gone for their top three for the title as their top three in the market for ‘highest scoring team’ this season, but that looks like a mistake.

Highest Scoring Teams in 2013-14:

Man City - 102 (goals)
Liverpool - 101
Chelsea - 71
Arsenal - 68
Man Utd - 64

Given that 30 goals separated the top two from the next best last term, logic would suggest that they should be the big favourites this time, but the odds don’t support this. While Man City may be shortest at 13/8 (PaddyPower), Liverpool are a best price of 6/1 (BetVictor) presumably all because Luis Suarez has left. Chelsea (11/4 BetVictor) and Man Utd (11/2 PaddyPower) are also favoured over the Reds.

But the assumption that the goals will dry up drastically at Anfield looks wide of the mark. Firstly, Daniel Sturridge relished his time as lead striker when the Uruguayan was suspended last term and he may just score even more in 2014-15 as he continues to develop.

Secondly, Rickie Lambert is a proven goalscorer at Premier League level and will get more opportunities in this side than he ever did at Southampton. The spot-kick specialist has grabbed 28 goals over his last two top flight campaigns.

Thirdly, Brendan Rodgers is still on the look out for a top-class striker and has plenty of time to find one before the transfer deadline, and failing that in January. It looked like Loic Remy was Anfield bound, but it’s inevitable that somebody of at least that calibre will arrive with funds available.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the swashbuckling approach of the Merseysiders is unlikely to be dispatched with when it so nearly brought the title last May. It was never just a case of Suarez and Sturridge scoring the goals with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Steven Gerrard and even Martin Skrtel all finding the net with more regularity as the season progressed. Expect Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic to get in on the act in future.

With all these factors at play, Liverpool can follow in the footsteps of Arsenal who found a way of scoring only two fewer goals the season after Robin Van Persie departed. If the Gunners coped then the Reds can give us a great run for our money at a surprisingly big price.
