Man Utd v Wigan: Community Shield Tip

The odds on this match fail to allow for the fact that United may not care unduly about the result.

In a match that can’t truly be described as competitive, outsiders Wigan look too long at best odds of 8/1 (Betfred) to win in 90 minutes. The unusual dynamic of this Community Shield is that the Latics are already in regular season mode having played their first league match last weekend; that sharpness could make this fixture closer than expected.

The recently relegated club began life in the Championship with an emphatic 4-0 victory at Barnsley which saw debutant Grant Holt announce his arrival with a goal. The £2m acquisition from Norwich City is 11/1 to score first with Boylesports who will refund a losing bet if Manchester United fail to win in 90 minutes.

Holt scored in the Canaries’ final three league matches of 2012-13 in the top flight so he is actually on a great run of form. Having found the net against Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool last term we shouldn’t doubt his capacity to trouble the very best teams. Particularly one who may still regard this as little more than a pre-season friendly.

*If Man Utd fail to win the Community Shield in 90 minutes Boylesports will refund First Goalscorer stakes up to £100.
