Liverpool v Arsenal Tip

Walcott answered his critics against Spurs

The England winger scored twice last week and may play as a striker on Saturday.

Both these teams had Sundays to remember last weekend with Liverpool winning the Carling Cup after Arsenal had annihilated Spurs 5-2 in the Premier League. Two success stories, but only the Gunners had a performance to be truly proud of. It is Arsene Wenger’s team who should really be heading to Anfield with a renewed sense of self-belief.

Arguably the best player on the park at the Emirates Stadium last week, at least in the second half, was Theo Walcott. The England winger terrorised a defence that has been tough to crack all season. He scored twice past Brad Friedel, and at a best price of 5/1 (WilliamHill) to score anytime this Saturday, he looks an enticing prospect.

Not a renowned goalscorer, Walcott has the bit between his teeth after his best performance of the season. But there is a further reason for what may appear on the face of it a slightly ambitious bet. Robin Van Persie aggravated a groin injury playing for Holland on Wednesday, making him a doubt to feature at Anfield. If the top flight’s leading scorer is absent, there is every chance that Wenger will deploy Walcott as an out-and-out striker.

The prospects get even better for this tip with the news that Daniel Agger will miss Saturday’s clash for Liverpool, with veteran Jamie Carragher stepping in as his replacement. Walcott is a real speed merchant and back on his game he could give the 34-year-old a really torrid afternoon. With Totesport going as short as 7/4, WilliamHill are offering us a real bargain on Walcott to score ‘anytime’ at 5/1.
