The Ice Age Could Continue

Iceland have won 5 of their 6 Group A clashes including home successes over Netherlands and Czech Republic.

Netherlands may have a formidably long unbeaten home record in qualifiers (W33 D4) dating back to 2000, but they are under distinct pressure to take three points on Thursday evening.

Iceland are the shock leaders of Group A and find themselves five points clear of their illustrious hosts after taking 15 points from six outings. Their highlight was the 2-0 victory over Oranje in Rejkjavik last October.

Lars Lagerback’s boys have built their success around a strong defence which has only conceded three times during the section. Iceland proved their heroics against Netherlands were no fluke when they also defeated Czech Republic.

The Dutch needed an injury time goal to avoid a crushing home defeat to Turkey in March so the scale of the task for new boss Danny Blind is clear to see.

I can’t see that long unbeaten run ending here with the talent at Netherland’s disposal, but the draw is clearly overpriced at 21/5 with Betfred.
