Inter Milan v Marseilles Tip

Having tipped Marseille’s 1-0 victory in the first leg at Stade Velodrome, I now expect the tie to swing back the other way in Italy. Since that first encounter on 22 February, the French side have quite simply capitulated in their homeland. Marseilles have lost four consecutive games in Ligue 1. Having slipped down to eighth in the table, their chances of playing in Europe’s premier competition again next season now appear slim.

It’s not even as though Didier Deschamps’ side have been playing the other top teams in the country. Their run of domestic defeats have come again Toulouse, Brest, Evian and Ajaccio - Marseilles haven’t even scored a goal in that stretch. Striker Loic Remy and winger Andre Ayew are both expected to play tonight, but neither one can be considered fully match fit.

If morale was poor for Inter heading into the first match, it looks a little brighter now. A 2-0 victory away to Chievo last Friday was the best result for The Nerazzurri in recent weeks. Claudio Ranieri will be looking to build on that, and take confidence from their opponents’ slump.

In truth, Inter were highly unfortunate to lose their away leg and they’ll know they have little to fear. With attacking options that include Milito, Pazzini, Forlan and a Wesley Sneijder who is approaching 100% fitness - goals should be possible for the hosts. It’s hard to say the same about shot-shy French opponents who are already talking like they might play for a draw. Always a danger approach.

If Inter can get their noses in front on the night then confidence levels will swing in their favour even more. I can see them claiming the 2-0 victory they require to progress at best odds of 17/2 with Coral.
