Holders Won't Go Down Without A Fight

The re-run of last season's FA Cup final will surely have a different outcome but that doesn't mean Wigan won't have their moments.

There’s no kind of value in simply backing Manchester City to beat Wigan at the Etihad on Sunday but we can improve our options markedly by taking the home win with both teams to score at best odds of 9/4 with Ladbrokes.

I don’t need to waste time explaining why Pellegrini’s boys should progress, so let’s focus instead on why the Latics might find the net. First and foremost, Uwe Rosler’s boys are in great form having won five on the bounce in all competitions, racking up 13 goals in the process. The 4-1 victory at promotion-chasing Forest last time out was a particular highlight.

Secondly, Wigan are the defending champions, they beat City to lift this trophy last May, and they therefore should have less of an inferiority complex than many visitors to the Etihad.

Finally, Man City are bound to have at least one eye on the trip to the Nou Camp on Wednesday night. A comeback against Barcelona may be hugely unlikely, but the players will relish the chance to perform at the iconic venue regardless.

Expect Pellegrini to try and get this game won and then rest a few of his key players late on if possible. The foot coming off the gas could be another way we win this bet.
