26th Feb 2014 | Europa League

Unfancied Bulgarians Can KO Lazio

The Italian giants were beaten in their own backyard and now Ludogorets can finish the job off.

The Europa League throws up its fair share of ‘David versus Goliath’ contests and the bookies tend to back reputation over form. This can lead to some decent value flying around if we take the time to look for it.

A prime example is Ludogorets Razgrad against mighty Lazio. The Bulgarians are enjoying a fairytale campaign having stormed through the group stages (W5 D1) before winning the first leg of this tie 1-0 in the Stadio Olimpico last week. It wasn’t unmerited as Ludogorets missed a penalty and struck the bar before taking the lead.

Lazio aren’t the fearsome side of old, sitting as they do 10th in Serie A having also lost their last away game, 3-1 to Catania. That said, their pride will be hurting and they will surely have a good go in Sofia on Thursday.

But we have no reason to think the hosts can’t secure the draw that will see them into the next round and at best odds of 23/10 (Bet365) that looks like a strong bet.
