Inter are unbeaten in this competition while Wolfsburg are flying high in the Bundesliga. If neither gives an inch it could be cagey.
It’s a sign of the times that Wolfsburg line up heavily odds on (4/6) to win their home leg against Inter with the European giants out at 9/2.
However, we shouldn’t rule out a classic Italian job with the 0-0 tempting at 16/1 with Coral.
Firstly, there is a danger that the Bundesliga club may experience a slight inferiority complex having never beaten Italian opposition before. Even if you feel that’s a little unlikely, consider how poorly the Germans faired against Everton in this competition during the group stages; the Toffees thumped Wolfsburg 4-1 at Goodison and 2-0 in the re-match.
Finally factor in that Dieter Hecking’s boys arrive off the back of a morale-sapping 1-0 defeat to Augsburg at the weekend. A night later Inter were retrieving a two goal deficit to draw 2-2 at high-flying Napoli; that result should have the opposite effect.
Roberto Mancini’s charges remain unbeaten in the Europa League this season and they would love to head back to the San Siro on level terms. Lest we forget that 0-0 is never the worst result for a home team either in this format.
