Wales v Slovakia: Total Goals Tip

Wales play their first major tournament game since 1958 on Saturday. It seems unlikely either side will play for a draw when a win could be priceless.

From a betting perspective, the surprise of the first few matches is that the bookies generally seem to expect very few goals. It isn’t entirely clear whether the defences are being overrated or the forwards overrated, but all will become clear soon!

Case in point comes in Group B’s opener between Wales and Slovakia. WilliamHill go as long as 2/1 on there being over 2.5 goals in the match - not bad when you consider the two previous meetings between these sides produced 13 goals!

To be fair those games were a while ago and pretty irrelevant, but there are recent reasons to expect some entertainment.

Slovakia’s qualifiers averaged 2.5 goals per match and three of their last four friendlies produced four goals apiece.

Admittedly Wales tend to be more defensively minded but any team with Gareth Bale is liable to find the net; he personally had 52 shots in qualifying, more than any other player in any team.

Besides, if Coleman’s boys defend anything like last Sunday when they lost 3-0 to Sweden, then it won’t matter what Bale does!
