Germany v Portugal: Total Goals Tip

Muller in action.

The Germans are vibrant going forward but suspect at the back at times.

There’s every chance that the first heavyweight clash of Euro 2012 will be a rather entertaining affair. We can get best odds of 11/10 (Boylesports) on there being over 2.5 goals when Germany meet Portugal.

In truth, it feels rather generous to put Portugal in the heavyweight category when Paulo Bento’s side may prove to be a pale imitation of its predecessors. They finished behind Denmark in qualifying and haven’t even won a match in 2012.

But with Ronaldo in the side they are still liable to get goals. The Real Madrid star scored seven in qualifying and had 54 shots - the most on the continent. With Nani and Postiga also liable to threaten, a German side with problems at the back will do well to keep a clean sheet. They recently conceded five to Switzerland.

But fortunately for Joachim Lowe, he has an embarrassment of attacking options. Klose or Gomez will be at the hub with the likes of Ozil, Schweinsteiger and Muller buzzing around behind. Germany scored 34 in qualifying and will surely have too much quality for a slightly suspect Portuguese outfit.

One way or another there should be a few goals in this Group B clash.
