England Top Goalscorer Euro 2012

Young: Emerging as a key player.

Scored in his last 4 internationals and bang on form.

With the general consensus being that England will do very well to get out of their group, Wayne Rooney makes for a curious favourite (6/1 Betfred) to top score for the Three Lions. Suspension means he may go home after playing just 90 minutes of football. There could be a very low scoring winner for this market so I would favour the one man who should play every game and is finding the net for his country currently.

Ashley Young (7/1 Ladbrokes) has four goals in his last four appearances for England. The quality of his winning effort and his all-round performance against Norway has surely assured him of a starting role against France on 11 June. Even more importantly, the 26-year-old flourished as a striker, rather than on the wing, and we can assume this is where Hodgson intends to play him when it counts.

It now looks a case of who else will play with Young up front in Rooney’s absence. Andy Carroll and Danny Wellbeck have one international goal between them while Jermain Defoe looks to be down the pecking order.

By process of elimination, Ashley Young must be the value option to be top scorer for England in Euro 2012 at a best price of 7/1 with Ladbrokes.
