Championship Promotion Tip 2016-17: Brentford

Nobody is looking at the Bees for promotion this time around but they were joint-highest scorers last term and finished the campaign like a juggernaut.

Sometimes a strong finish to one season can build momentum that carries right through to the next and Brentford will be hoping that proves the case after a storming run to close out 2015-16 (W7 D1 L1).

To make prospects even brighter for Bees’ fans, they start at Huddersfield on Saturday, scene of a splendid 5-1 victory on the final day of last term in May.

It ended a turbulent period for the club who saw Mark Warburton leave in trying circumtstances last summer having guided Brentford to fifth spot. Dean Smith finally took over at the end of November and, after a decidedly shaky run, he really delivered in the spring.

Intriguingly, Smith’s boys ended up as the joint highest scorers in the Championship with 72 goals with the problem being they leaked 67. If they can tighten up, even to a moderate level, they might make a mockery of best odds of 11/1 (Bet365) on promotion to the top flight.

This is a division where you can have a really bad run and still pull it together for a top six finish. Then anything can happen.

Propelled by Scott Hogan who scored seven times in under 180 minutes after returning from injury late last season, Brentford could spring a surprise at a decent price.
