Champions League Outright Tip

There is always an underdog in the latter stages of the competition and the long odds suggest Chelsea are that. However, as Europa League champions, part of the strong English contingent and with quality youngsters, perhaps they shouldn't be.

As the Champions League group stages kick off on Tuesday it’s always worth remembering that it ultimately becomes a knockout competition in which dark horses often exceed expectations.

In recent seasons we have seen the likes of Monaco, Ajax and Spurs emerge in the semi-finals and beyond so there’s some value at longer prices.

Given the huge success of English clubs in recent times I’d mark out Chelsea as worth a look at best odds of 50/1 with Bet365 - back them each way to get paid out at half odds if they lose in the final.

The reigning Europa League champions have been unusually written off because of their transfer ban and the departure of Eden Hazard, but there are signs it could be the making of them.

Already we see Abraham, Mount and other youngsters taking their opportunity while the defence will settle with the likes of Rudiger coming back.

The Premier League may not be a major distraction with Liverpool and Man City battling it out for the title. A tussle for the top-four is not a reason to fail to challenge on other fronts.

Lampard looks like a club legend ready to play his hand very well, and with some good luck and a kind draw you just never know.

*Note this tip is now advised at 50/1 having originally been posted at 33/1. As per BB transparency policy, we will only settle a winning bet at the lower price to keep maximum credibility.
