Champions League: Outright Tip

Last season's Europa League champions have made it to the final of the main competition twice in recent years as well. They quietly went about doing some great summer business and let Barca and Real take the limelight and the shorter odds.

They may have started the La Liga season sluggishly, but Atletico Madrid may just be the value in the Champions League outright market as the action gets back underway on Tuesday.

The market reflects the fact that Atleti live forever in the shadow of their domestic rivals but that didn’t stop them reaching the final in both 2014 and 2016. At a best price 16/1 with Skybet, they are slipping under the radar again.

Neighbours Real scuppered them on both those occasions but with Ronaldo off to Italy it’s hard to see them making it four in a row. As for Barca, they’ve only made one CL final in the last seven attempts.

Atletico gave a glimpse of their capabilities by beating Real 4-2 in the UEFA Super Cup in August. Yes that game only has minimal significance but a derby and trophies always matter and Diego Simeone still has the players to do real damage in the biggest competitions.

Diego Costa scored twice in that match but the ongoing presence of Antoine Griezmann is even more crucial. Throw in the signing of Thomas Lemar, purchased off Tuesday’s opponents Monaco, and there is star quality in addition to an always formidable defence.

Back them each-way and get half odds paid out if they just reach a third final in six years.
