Cardiff City 2013-14 Preview

The Bluebirds have splashed a reported £26m on 3 players since earning promotion as champions in April.

Best odds to be relegated: 7/4 (Boylesports)
Last season: 1st (Championship)

Reasons for hope:

There shouldn’t be a shortage of belief in a team that’s just been promoted as champions. If they did need a further boost however it has come from large summer investment. Cardiff have reportedly broken their transfer record three times recently with the additions of Danish striker Andreas Cornelius (£7.5m), Steven Caulkner (£8m) and now Gary Medel (reportedly £11m) from Sevilla.

Potential bet: Cardiff to finish top 10 - 9/1 (Betfred)

Reasons to worry:

Three players were joint-top scorers with just 8 goals apiece in 2012-13. Malky Mackay is putting a lot of faith in 20-year-old Cornelius adding to his team’s firepower; it’s a big ask of a youngster with only one year’s experience as a professional, arriving from an easier league.

Potential bet: Cardiff top goalscorer - Peter Whittingham 16/1 (Skybet). The attacking midfielder looks like a good long shot having been one of the leading scorers last term and having bagged 12, 11 and 20 league goals in the seasons prior to that.

Verdict:

Much will depend on how quickly it takes the big money signings to settle; a relegation dog fight looks highly likely though.
